Melfi Private Tour
Melfi Private Tour
At your chosen time, we'll meet at the entrance to the Castle of Melfi. Your guide will be waiting for you outside this incredible building, which is the most famous fortress in Basilicata and one of the largest in southern Italy. Let's start exploring!
Surrounded by ten towers, the Castle of Melfi stands atop a once volcanic hill overlooking the town. Its fascinating history dates back to the 11th century when it was built at the behest of Roberto il Guiscardo, only to be enlarged by Frederick II of Swabia who chose it as his summer residence. Over the centuries, the castle has been the scene of various historical events... Did you know that six papal councils were held here, including one by the antipope Anacletus II?
On the ground floor of the castle, you'll visit the National Archaeological Museum of Melfi. Here, you'll look closely at the artefacts found in the Vulture area, such as Daunian ceramics with geometric decoration and armour and bronze vases made by both the Greeks and the Etruscans. In the Clock Tower, you'll also see a spectacular Roman sarcophagus known as the 'Sarcophagus of Rapolla'. This coffin, which features the sleeping deceased on the lid and Roman gods and heroes on the side panels, dates back to the second century AD and is originally from workshops in Asia Minor.
The tour will continue with a visit to the historic centre of Melfi as we head to the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta. Built in 1055 on the orders of Roger Guiscard, this church has undergone several restorations over the centuries, retaining only the bell tower from 1153. Inside, you'll see the 18th-century coffered ceiling, pulpit, throne and organ in late Baroque style.
After exploring the town's main sights and visiting its cathedral, we'll say our goodbyes and finish our private tour of Melfi.
