Matera Walking Tour
Matera Walking Tour
The tour meets at 10 am in the quaint, central, Piazza Vittorio Veneto, where we'll begin our walking tour of the main points in this beautiful city: 2019's European Capital of Culture.
The first stop on the tour will be the Piazza dei Sedile, home to the majestic palace that, for various reasons your expert guide will reveal on the day, has become a symbol of the cultural life of Matera. Then we'll continue to discover the city, heading to the Via Duomo, where we'll find two of the ancient points of entry to the city: the Porta di Juso and the Porta di Suso.
The next stop takes place in front of one of the star attractions in the city: the Matera cathedral. Its architectural style, known as Romanesque, is present throughout, and you'll learn to distinguish its various characteristics. And just around the corner you can find the Casa Grotta de Matera: one of the city's traditional houses, where you can find out about day to day life in these "Sassi" cut into the rock and protected as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
And the Sassi influence extends to the places of worship constructed using this technique - among which the Church of Santa Maria de Idris. Inside you'll find a stunning example of this technique, before we'll finish the tour at 12:30.
