Sasso Caveoso Guided Tour
At the scheduled time we'll meet at Via Domenico Ridola, 61, where we'll be waiting for you to begin this tour of one of the most famous districts of Matera!
We'll start the tour with a brief introduction of the historical, architectural, and anthropological highlights of Sassi di Matera. Did you know the term "sassi" refers to the houses carved into the rock that make up the historic center of the city?
We'll then walk to Sasso Caveoso, one of the two districts that make up Sassi di Matera. Here we'll visit the baroque church of San Pietro Caveoso and the Cave House, a typically furnished dwelling that we'll visit to learn about the way of life of the ancient inhabitants of these caves.
We'll also talk about why the materanos had to abandon these traditional dwellings in the 1950s following the laws signed by President De Gasperi. Next, we'll tour the famous cave churches, a series of rock-hewn temples built between the 10th and 13th centuries.
Our next stop will be at Il Bottegaccio, an artisan workshop where we'll see how they make various crafts with ceramics and papier-mâché in the traditional style of Matera. To round off the tour, we'll also enjoy a tasting of local products.
After 2 hours of touring this fascinating district, we'll return to the starting point to say our goodbyes.
