Archaeological remains, cloisters and bread with a Protected Designation of Origin await on our Altamura & Gravina Day Trip. If you'd like to explore Matera's surroundings, this is the perfect activity for you!

Altamura & Gravina Day Trip

At 9:30 am, we'll meet in Piazza Vittorio Veneto and hop aboard a bus for our day trip to Altamura and Gravina.

Altamura, also known as The Apulian Lioness, is famous for its heritage and its bread, which has a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO). When we get there we'll set off on a tour from Porto Bari, one of the entrances to the old town of Altamura.

From here, we'll walk to the Cathedral. As we observe the cathedral, which dates back to the 13th century, we'll admire the sculpted decorations on its beautiful portal. We'll also take a look at the clock tower, a Gothic element that was added in 1858.

Our tour through the streets of Altamura will continue to the Cloisters, which are an authentic symbol of the city. These square-shaped courtyards still retain their original layout. We'll visit some of them, such as the Giudecca Cloister, the Tradimento Cloister and the Mori Cloister.

Afterwards, we'll head inside the National Archaeological Museum of Altamura to see the famous Altamura Man. This fossil is the skeleton of a Homo neanderthalensis found in nearby caves. Before we enter the museum, we'll taste some delicious PDO bread baked in a wood-fired oven.

You'll then have some free time to eat lunch, after which we'll reconvene and travel to Gravina. This breathtaking town was built upon a ravine that towers at almost 330 feet (100 metres). As we walk around the town, we'll see the Cathedral of the Assumption and the Crypt of St. Michael excavated in the rock. We'll also cross the beautiful bridge of the Madonna della Stella

We'll then return to Matera and drop you off at your hotel at around 5 pm.
