Notre Dame de la Garde Free Tour
Description
We'll meet at the parking garage near Notre-Dame de la Garde, at the foot of the famous Marseille Basilica. Here, we'll start our tour by taking in the impressive Roman-Byzantine temple façade, an architectural icon of the city.
As we listen to anecdotes and fun facts about the city, we'll enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of Marseille from the Notre Dame de la Garde staircase. From this privileged vantage point, we'll see it all, from Port Vieux to the historic downtown. Moreover, if we look closely enough, we can glimpse the Frioul archipelago. Of the small islands that make up this land formation, the Island of If stands out as the historic setting of Alexandre Dumas' iconic "The Count of Monte Cristo."
Then, we'll head downtown via the Bois Sacré and Boulevard André Aune. Along the way, we'll pass by Pierre Puget Park, the old Latin quarter that also houses the remains of the Roman necropolis of Massilia. As we continue walking, we'll pass by the former residence of French activist Berty Albrecht who fought against Nazi occupation during World War II.
Surrounded by history, we'll take a short break for a sweet treat. We'll stop at a local bakery where those inclined can try the traditional Marseille navettes—a beloved and sweet treat of the city! With our sweet tooths satisfied, we'll come to a monument paying tribute to Missak Manouchian, a heroic figure who valiantly battled against the Nazi regime during World War II.
After 2.5 hours of sightseeing, we'll bring the tour to a close at Palais du Pharo Park.
