Description
We'll meet at the charming old port to begin our tour of this city in the South of France. This place is known as the 'birthplace' of the city. We'll soon find out why and what stories are behind this 2,600-year-old city!
First, we'll venture into the oldest quarter of France, Le Panier, where we'll walk past many iconic monuments. Then we'll continue the tour onto Hotel Dieu, a building which is full of history. In fact, this iconic hotel was used to host the Marseille Provence 2013 cultural event series, during which Marseille was the European Capital of Culture.
Then, we'll make our way up the "Accoules climb" to reach the Place des Moulins. This beautiful historic square is lined with townhouses and trees. We'll then continue along the Panier to finish our tour close to the Mucem Museum. This impressive structure houses the Museum of the Civilizations of Europe and the Mediterranean. Its modern design juxtaposes Fort St. Jean which was built in 1660 by Louis XIV. The Fort St. Jean is actually connected to the museum by a 115-meter-long (337 ft) bridge and houses some of its exhibitions.
Finally, we'll finish our visit at 1 pm next to Fort St. Jean.
