On this guided tour of the salt pans in Marsala, you'll explore this magical scenery made up of hills and channels. Plus, you'll visit the windmill in Infersa!
Marsala Salt Pans Tour
At the designated time, we'll meet at the entrance of the salt mines in Marsala to begin our tour. Did you know these salt pans are considered one of the most beautiful in Italy? Located within the Stagnon Nature Reserve, not only are these salt pans an important financial source for the city and the region—they are also the habitat for various species of migratory birds. Get ready to see diverse fauna and flora!
We'll begin touring the windmill in Infersa, where you'll learn the details of sea salt production and collection with the help of some videos and learn how this structure works. This windmill is the only one still operating in the province of Trapani and one of the only ones in Italy. It dates back to the 16th century!
Once the tour is over, we'll stop at the salt pans of the mill, where we'll enter the salt pans by walking on the shore between the different pools. Here, we'll share interesting facts about manual salt collection. Did you know that this product has a Protected Geographical Indication due to its centuries-old extraction technique?
Depending on the time of the day, this tour will be even more special because of the changing colors of the pools. At sunset, you'll see pink and orange hues contrasting the blue of the Mediterranean Sea. During the rest of the day, the rays of the sun will illuminate the salt mounds, highlighting their whiteness and making the landscape almost surreal. It's the perfect time to take a picture!
After this 1-hour tour, we'll conclude the activity and say our goodbyes.
