Visit two monuments in the same day with this excursion to El Escorial and the Valley of the Fallen. A journey through time from the 16th century to the Spanish Civil War.
El Escorial & Valley of the Fallen Half-Day Trip
We'll meet on Calle San Nicolás, next to Plaza de Ramales in Madrid. After introductions, we'll board the bus and set off at 8:30 am for El Escorial.
The first stop will be the Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, protected by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Here, we'll journey back in time to the 16th century, specifically to the time of King Philip II, to learn why this area of the Sierra de Guadarrama was chosen to build this solemn construction.
As we walk through the different rooms of the monastery, we'll learn many interesting facts about this impressive monument. We'll visit several rooms of the Habsburg Palace, visit the pantheon and see the emblematic library of the Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial - a visit you'll never forget!
Next, we'll make our way to the basilica of the Valley of the Fallen, carved into the rock and topped with a huge cross standing over 100 meters tall. As we access its interior and visit its chapels, we'll go back in history to the Spanish Civil War to learn about the origins of this controversial monument.
After a five-hour tour, we'll return to Madrid, and say goodbye in the bus parking lot at Plaza de Oriente.
