Zaruma Day Trip
Zaruma Day Trip
At 8:00 am we will pick you up from your hotel in Machala and board the minibus to head east towards Portovelo. When reaching the municipality in the province of El Oro we'll visit the Magnet Turner Mineralogical Museum, where you will learn in detail about the properties of the stones and minerals that proliferate in this area of Ecuador.
The next stop on the tour will be Zaruma, one of the oldest cities in the country. As we explore its historic centre, we´ll review the origins of this city marked by tradition and religion. During the walking tour we will pass by the Virgen del Carmen church, the Plaza de la Independencia and the many colourful wooden houses that dot the centre of Zaruma.
Did you know that beneath the city lies an extensive network of tunnels? This is the famous Zaruma mines, the next visit of the tour. We will enter the El Sexmo mine to discover the daily life of the workers in its underground tunnels. We'll also learn about the main minerals extracted.
During the visit to the mine we'll see the carts, the safety suits and many other elements typical of this trade that has marked the history of Zaruma.
