With this ticket, you'll learn the ins and outs of this British institution, discovering its role throughout history and today. During your visit, you'll hear testimonials from former and current cavalrymen and see their iconic red suits.
A visit to the museum will also take you to around the 18th century stables where you'll find soldiers going about their daily chores, as well as discovering numerous interactive exhibits and, of course, witnessing the hourly changing of the guards.
History of the Royal Cavalry
Located at Horse Guards in Whitehall, in the heart of London, the Household Cavalry Museum is in one of the most significant buildings in the capital. Did you know that it was founded in 1750 and remains the headquarters of the Household Division? This institution is responsible for being the King's Life Guard in a ceremony that has remained virtually unchanged for more than 350 years.
By visiting the museum, you can learn all about the history of the Household Cavalry, formed by King Charles II in 1661. Today, it consists of two of the British Army's most senior regiments: the Life Guards and the Blues & Royals.
Protecting His Majesty the King during ceremonial acts, manning combat vehicles around the world in humanitarian operations and participating in peacekeeping missions are some of their main duties.
The building also features the Horse Guards clock which, before Big Ben, was the main public clock in the City of Westminster. Did you know that it hides a dark legend about the execution of King Charles?
Changing of the Guard
If you're in London, the Changing of the Guard ceremony is a must-see. If you want to attend, you should note that it takes place every day at 11 am, bringing members of the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment from Hyde Park Barracks to relieve those on duty and take up their positions at Horse Guards.
The route passes Hyde Park Corner, Constitution Hill and The Mall before arriving at Horse Guards Parade, just in front of the Household Cavalry Museum.
Additionally, the daily inspection takes place at 4 pm in the Courtyard of the Horse Guards.
