Why Visit the Monastery of São Vicente de Fora?

Erected on a hill over the Tagus River, very close to the National Pantheon in Portugal, the Monastery of São Vicente de Fora is an extraordinary monument dedicated to the patron saint of Lisbon.

During the Christian siege in 1147, Afonso I, the first king of Portugal, made a promise: if he succeeded in conquering the city from the Muslims, he would have a monastery built dedicated to Saint Vincent. This monastery was founded the same year outside the city walls, which is how the priory got its name.

With your ticket to the Monastery of São Vicente de Fora, you'll explore this convent at your own pace, admiring its walls decorated with an incredible collection of Baroque tiles. Dating between the 17th and 18th centuries, these tiles tell many stories—from historical events to hunting scenes, pastoral romances, and fairy tales written by La Fontaine.

Plus, the monastery houses an ancient 12th-century cistern, two cloisters, a Mannerism-style church, and a sacristy. You can also visit the Pantheon of the House of Braganza, home to the remains of monarchs like Afonso VI "the Victorious,"  Joseph I "the Reformer," or Manuel II of Portugal "the Unfortunate," the last king of Portugal.

You can also climb up to the terraces of the Monastery of São Vicente de Fora with your ticket. From here, you'll enjoy the beautiful scenic views of Lisbon's old town and the banks of the Tagus River.
