Codfish History Interpretation Centre

Welcome to the Codfish History Interpretation Centre! At this museum in Lisbon, you'll be able to review numerous fishing adventures that will make you understand why so much cod is so important in Portugal.

During your visit you'll discover many interesting facts about the star product of Portuguese cuisine: did you know that a cod can live for 20 years and weigh up to 90 kilos, and that each female can lay up to nine million eggs? These are some of the many fascinating facts that the museum will teach you.

You'll travel back to the 15th century to analyse the ancient journeys of brave sailors to the waters of Greenland and the island of Newfoundland in search of cod. In addition, you'll take part in an immersive experience in which you'll feel the loneliness and the climatic conditions faced by the fishermen in the North Atlantic.

A virtual tasting room with over 1000 different recipes, a cod propaganda exhibition during the Salazar dictatorship, the present of fishing in times of climate change... The Codfish History Interpretation Centre will leave you speechless!

Timetable

The Codfish History Interpretation Centre is open from Monday to Sunday from 10 am to 7 pm. On holidays (December 24 and 31 and January 1), it'll be open from 10 am to 5 pm.
