Free Walking Tour of Belem
Free Tour of Belem
We'll start our free walking tour in Praça Afonso de Albuquerque in the heart of Belem. In this square, your guide will start explaining about the Age of Discovery and the role that this neighbourhood played in this important period of European history.
Next, we'll head to the beautiful Belém Palace, where you'll learn about the history behind the world-famous Portuguese custard tarts, known as pastéis de Belém. Afterwards, we'll head to the Jerónimos Monastery. This is one of the most prominent examples of the Portuguese Late Gothic Manueline-style architecture in Lisbon and, alongside the nearby Tower of Belem, it was named as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.
Not only will you also get to see the tower, but our expert guide will also take you to visit the Padrão dos Descobrimentos (Monument of Discoveries), which celebrates the Portugues Age of Discovery in the 15th and 16th centuries; the 25 de Abril bridge, a 7,470 ft (2,277 metre) long suspension bridge used as a backdrop in the 1969 James Bond movie On Her Majesty's Secret Service; Praça do Império, a beautiful square with green spaces, statues and an impressive fountain; and much more.
After approximately 2 and a half hours discovering this fascinating, iconic neighbourhood, our tour will come to an end.
Please note that this free walking tour is not available for groups of over 6 people. If you have a larger group, why not book a private tour of Lisbon?
