Lisbon Walking Tour
Our free walking tour of Lisbon will start at the indicated time at the obelisk in Praça dos Restauradores. After a brief introduction to the Portuguese capital, we'll start our walk by the statue of the Monumento al Calceteiro, dedicated to the workers in charge of maintaining the Portuguese artistic pavement.
Afterwards, we'll continue our walk towards other gems of Lisbon's city centre, such as the San Roque Church and the Santo Domingo Church. As we stroll, we'll hear about how Lisbon was the scene of events that shook the whole country, like the 1755 earthquake or the Carnation Revolution, which put an end to the reign of the 'New State' and its dictator Salazar. We'll get to see the remains left by these episodes of the past as we walk through areas steeped in history. Continuing on, our tour will take us to the famous Praça Rossio, where we'll admire the monumental façade of its railway station and the Jewish Memorial.
Next, we'll make our way to the area of the Convent do Carmo and the Santa Justa elevator. This famous lift dates all the way back to 1902! Then, we'll head towards the Chiado district. In this iconic area, we'll learn all about the famous figures of Portuguese literature: Luís Vaz de Camões and Fernando Pessoa. These literary giants wrote about Portugal's role as one of the world's major powers.
While in Chiado, we'll also stop at the Bertrand shop, the oldest bookshop in the world. This landmark has even been recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records!
Finally, we'll take a walk along Rua Augusta, where we'll pass under its emblematic monumental arch. After a journey of approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes, we'll conclude our walking tour of Lisbon in the central Praça do Comércio. See you next time!
