Free Fado Tour of Lisbon
Free Fado Tour of Lisbon
At 5:30 pm we'll meet at the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Saúde ready to begin learning about the history of fado on a free walking tour of Lisbon.
"You feel it, you don't understand it and you don't explain it", said Amália Rodrigues, a singer known as the Queen of Fado, of the traditional Portuguese music genre. We'll get to feel it for ourselves as we delve into the streets of Mouraria, the district considered to be the birthplace of fado.
Strolling along Rua Capelao, we'll discover the portraits of a number of famous fado singers, including Argentina Santos or Fernando Maurício. We'll then follow in musical footsteps up Beco do Jasmin and Beco das Farinhas and take in the incredible views from the Chão do Loureiro and Santa Luzia viewpoints.
Reaching the Alfama neighbourhood, we'll hear about the recent history of fado and how the genre has been reinvented in recent decades. Did you know that the music was banned under the Salazar dictatorship?
Our free walking tour of Lisbon will come to an end in front from the Fado Museum at 8 pm.
