Belém + Palace of Ajuda Tour
Description
At the time indicated, we'll meet at the central fountain in the Jardim da Praça do Império and, from here, we'll walk to the Monument of the Discoveries.
After learning about the history behind this monument, we'll continue our tour on foot around the neighbourhood of Belém at the Church in the Jeronimos Monastery, one of the largest masterpieces of the Manueline Gothic style. This place is home to the graves of members of Portuguese royalty. We'll also see the tombs of the poet Luis de Camoes and the explorer Vasco da Gama.
Then, we'll visit a traditional bakery which makes the famous Pasteis de Nata following a monk recipe. You can try these traditional treats here if you want!
After this optional treat, we'll head by public transport to the Palace of Ajuda, the ancient residence of the most loved Queen by the Portuguese, Dona Maria Pia of Savoy, daughter of Victor Manuel II.
During the tour, we'll explore its decorated rooms in the 19th-century style, such as the Kings' rooms and the Throne Room. In addition, we'll see an important collection of sculptures and paintings, with works of art from artists such as El Greco and Géricault, and other decorative art from the 18th and 19th centuries, including jewellery, furniture and glass and ceramic objects.
Finally, we'll end this activity after 3.5-4 hours at the Palace of Ajuda.
