South Peru Campervan Tour Package: 14 Days
South Peru Campervan Tour Package: 14 Days
You'll have 2 weeks to take the campervan of your choice on an incredible adventure around southern Peru. During your rental period, you'll be able to follow a route of your choosing, but we recommend the following:
Day 1: Lima
We'll pick you up when you arrive at the airport and take you to the hotel in Lima where you'll spend your first night. You'll also be given your vehicle at the hotel.
Day 2: Lima - Paracas
Rise and shine! We recommend getting up early and setting off for the Paracas National Reserve, one of the main attractions in South Peru. Your drive will take around 3 hours. Once you arrive, you can admire the breathtaking scenery or take a trip to the Ballestas Islands to see Humboldt penguins and sea lions. You can camp at the Paracas National Reserve campsite.
Day 3: Paracas - Nazca
If you didn't have time to visit the Ballestas Islands, you can do this on the morning of the third day. You could also take a tour of the vineyards in Ica, a famous Peruvian wine-growing region, or go on a dune buggy tour of the Paracas Desert. In the afternoon, you can make the 3-hour 30-minute drive to Nazca and relax at the Casa Hacienda de Nazca.
Day 4: Nazca - Puerto Inca
On the fourth day, you can make the most of your stay in Nazca by taking a flight over the Nazca Lines, where you'll discover one of the greatest enigmas in the field of archaeology.
To round off the day, we also recommend a visit to the Cantalloc aqueducts, the Chauchilla cemetery and the pyramids of Cahuachi. In the afternoon, after a drive lasting around 2 hours 30 minutes, you'll arrive at Puerto Inca.
Day 5: Puerto Inca - Arequipa
We recommend waking up bright and early, as there are 250 miles (400 kilometres) between Puerto Inca and the next destination, Arequipa. In the morning you can visit the archaeological complex of Quebrada La Vaca in Puerto Inca, and then head for Arequipa up the famous Cuesta de los Andes.
Day 6: Arequipa
Arequipa is a city with a lot to offer, so we definitely recommend spending a whole day here. You can take a tour around its viewpoints, monasteries and churches, as well as going on the exciting Ashlar route to see the quarries. Don't leave without having lunch at one of Arequipa's famous picanterias, where you'll try traditional Arequipan cuisine.
Day 7: Arequipa - Colca Canyon
In the morning, you can set off for the extraordinary Colca Canyon, which is about 4 hours 30 minutes away from Arequipa. Don't forget to look up! You might even see Andean condors flying over the canyon.
Day 8: Colca Canyon
Close to the Colca Canyon, you'll find the villages of Chivay, Yanque, Maca, Coporaque, Achoma and Lari. You can travel through these villages and learn about their traditional way of life, or combine it with a canoe trip on the Colca River.
Day 9: Colca Canyon - Lake Titicaca
On day nine, we recommend setting off early to get to Lake Titicaca in good time, as the drive takes 6 hours 30 minutes. You can make some interesting stops along the way, for example in Lampa. Once you've arrived, you can camp in one of the local communities on the shores of the lake.
Day 10: Lake Titicaca
We recommend setting aside a whole day to explore Lake Titicaca and its wonders, such as Uros Island, Taquile and Amantani. The best way to do this would be on a kayak or speedboat tour.
Day 11: Lake Titicaca - Cusco
The journey between Lake Titicaca and Cusco takes about 7 hours, so we suggest leaving early and making stops to visit places along the way, such as Pucara, Racqhi or Andahuaylillas. When you arrive in Cusco, you can spend the night at the Sacsayhuaman campsite.
Day 12: Cusco - Sacred Valley
From Cusco, we highly recommend heading to the Sacred Valley of the Incas to visit the archaeological sites of Sacsayhuaman, Tambomachay and Tipon. Another option would be to visit the salt mines of Maras or the city of Moray. The Sacred Valley has a campsite where you can spend the night.
Day 13: Sacred Valley - Machu Picchu - Cusco
While you're in the Sacred Valley, you definitely won't want to miss a visit to one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. The best way to explore this incredible place would be a private tour of Machu Picchu starting from Aguas Calientes. In the evening, you'll stay in a hotel in Cusco, where we'll collect the campervan.
Day 14: Cusco
We'll pick you up from the hotel in Cusco in the morning and then take you to the airport.
Tour with a driver
If you'd rather not to drive and instead enjoy the landscapes of southern Peru, the tour with a driver is your best option. We'll pick you up at the airport to take you to the hotel in Lima and, from the second day, the tour you'll go on with the driver will be the one described above.
What are the campervans like?
All of the vehicles are equipped with GPS, manual drive and a cruising speed of 62 mi/h (100 km/h). Our Hyundai Campervan has a height of 8.2 feet (2.5 metres), while our Hilux Motorhome has a height of 6.9 feet (2.1 metres).
The maximum capacity of the campervans is 5 people. Sleeping capacity is 3 adults and 1 child in the Hyundai Campervan and 2 adults and 1 child in the Hilux Motorhome. If you exceed the maximum sleeping capacity, you'll be able to hire tents and sleeping bags at the campsites. The price for hiring a tent for 2 people is US$ 10 and each sleeping bag is US$ 8.
