Grottaglie and Matera Trip
We will pick you up from your hotel before heading to the region of Murgia. Our 50-minute journey takes us through idyllic countryside and stone houses, we will arrive at Grottaglie in the province of Taranto.
There you will find a captivating city surrounded by fascinating prehistoric caves. We will stroll through the picturesque streets here, filled with wonderful artisan shops selling colorful traditional ceramics. If you want to know more about this craft tradition, you can visit the Museum of Ceramics before continuing your walk through the historic center.
Then we travel to the neighboring province, arriving in the town of Matera, which has origins dating back to the stone age. We head into the so-called 'City of Stones', to explore the enchanting labyrinth of narrow streets, houses, and balconies. Don't forget to also visit the wonderful neighborhoods of Civita, Sasso Barisano and Sasso Caveoso before leaving!
In Matera, named European Capital of Culture 2019, you will also visit the 'Sassi', an area of prehistoric cave houses, carved out of the cliff face. Exploring the narrow alleyways here, you will understand exactly why Mel Gibson chose this town as the setting for his film The Passion of Christ.
