Learn lots of interesting facts about the Christian faith in a city that held vital importance during the colonisation of the Americas on our La Vega Religious History Tour.
La Vega Religious History Tour
At 10 am, we'll pick you up from your hotel and start a tour of La Vega's religious history, during which we'll learn all about the Catholic faith.
We'll stroll through Duarte Park until we reach the Immaculate Conception Cathedral. When we arrive, we'll step inside and observe the colour of its walls and what they represent, the origin of its semi-elliptical columns and the symbolism of the number 12. We'll also see the atypical resurrected Christ and the Virgin of Christopher Columbus, as well as the first cross in America.
Next, we'll go to the Sacred Museum, where we'll see Taíno figures, archaeological remains, paintings, relics of great value and an allegory of the first indigenous baptism. As we exit, we'll see where the old cathedral once stood before making our way up to Santo Cerro, where the Church of Our Lady of Mercedes is located. Here, we'll discuss the legend of the indigenous people and the apparition of the Virgin Mary.
Afterwards, we'll go to La Vega Vieja where we'll see the first Spanish settlement to be built in the area. Unfortunately, this settlement was destroyed by an earthquake in the 16th century. While we're here, we'll learn about Christianisation and this area's first settlers.
Following a fascinating tour, we'll take you back to the starting point and finish our visit at 1:30 pm.
