On this tour of Valle de la Luna, Talampaya, and Laguna Brava, we'll explore the best desert landscapes west of La Rioja in 2 days. Such a unique trip!
Trip Details
Day 1: Valle de la Luna - Talampaya
Ready to admire landscapes that will make you think you're on an entirely different planet? If this is the case, after picking you up from your hotel in La Rioja, we'll make our way to the Ischigualasto Provincial Park, better known as Valle de la Luna (Valley of the Moon). Get your cameras ready!
After a 2.5-hour drive, we'll reach our destination and go on a vehicle tour that will take us through incredible reddish rock formations. Amongst these, the Bowling Green, the Submarine, the Mushroom, the Red Cliffs, and the Museum, are all particularly notable. These imposing formations will amaze you!
After exploring this incredible natural spot, you'll have free time to rest in the visitor centre and grab yourself some lunch. We'll meet back up to begin our journey to Talampaya National Park.
Once here, we'll learn about the fascinating erosion that has taken place for over 45 million years. This has turned it into the most important arid landscape for Argentinian geology. On our tour we'll also pass by a canyon, stopping to look at some petroglyphs such as the Gothic Cathedral, the Monk, and the Botanical Garden. Authentic works of art in nature!
Our day will come to an end after a total of 12 hours at your hotel in Villa Unión.
Day 2: Laguna Brava
Our adventure across reddish earth continues after we pick you up from your hotel in Villa Unión and begin our journey to the star destination of the day: Laguna Brava Provincial Reserve. Let's go!
During the trip, we'll pass by La Quebrada de la Troya, a hilly trail from which we'll get to see Andean landscapes and the Vinchina River. After 10 kilometres (6.2 miles), we'll reach Quebrada del Peñón, a hiking trail that will take us to Laguna Brava's entrance. This inhospitable landscape is surrounded by arid hills that we'll cross, marking the first sign that we are nearing our destination.
Once we're in the park, we'll see the high-altitude lagoon system typical of the Andes. However, the one that will undoubtedly catch your attention the most is Laguna Brava, renowned for its population of white and pink flamingos. Additionally, the backdrop of snow-capped mountains will be an unforgettable sight. The perfect photo opportunity!
This day will come to an end back at your hotel in La Rioja around 8 pm.
