Los Colorados or Condor Ravine Hike
Hike Options
During the booking process, you can choose between two options: a hiking trail in Los Colorados Provincial Reserve, or one in Condor Ravine. The choice is yours! Both hikes include hotel pickup and drop-off in La Rioja and a Spanish-speaking guide. These are the details of each trail:
Los Colorados (8 Hours)
After a 75-kilometre (46.6-mile) drive from La Rioja, we'll reach the municipality of Patquia. Once here, we'll make our way to Los Colorados, at the southern tip of a 20,000-hectare valley.
Once we begin hiking, we'll be surrounded by incredible bright red rock formations. This desert landscape is known for its ancient rock art, home to over 200 petroglyphs thousands of years old. Can you guess which indigenous people used to live in this area? We'll find out on the hike!
We'll then reach Chacho Cave, where we'll go inside to discuss the history of those who used to live in the region. Along this 2-kilometre (1.24 miles) trail, we'll also pass the Natural Bridge, a curious rock shaped by wind erosion.
Schedule: This hike option begins at 9 am.
Condor Ravine (14 Hours)
Our first stop will be Punta de los Llanos after a 110-kilometre (68-mile) journey from La Rioja. During this drive, we'll pass the municipals of Tama and Puca Cala until reaching the Santa Cruz de la Sierra Estate. This location will mark the starting point of our hike along Condor Ravine.
We'll follow an uphill trail surrounded by big rocks, mountains, and postcard-pretty landscapes until we reach an incredible viewpoint. We'll make a stop here to watch Andean condors take flight. Impressive!
After enjoying this special moment, we'll begin our journey downhill until we reach an inn where you'll have some free time to rest and relax in this beautiful natural spot before returning to La Rioja.
Schedule: this hike option begins at 7 am.
