Discover a fascinating architectural movement in Bolivia on our Neo-Andean Architecture Tour in El Alto. We'll see some of the contemporary buildings designed in this style by Freddy Mamani.
Neo-Andean Architecture Tour
At 9 am, we'll meet at the La Paz purple cable car station to make our way west of the capital towards the town of El Alto.
As soon as you're in the cable car cabin, you'll see La Paz from a unique perspective and be able to take incredible photos of the city. As its name in Spanish suggests, El Alto is located on a high point and has an average elevation of 13,100 feet (4,000 metres). This neighbourhood has also undergone accelerated growth, giving its inhabitants an enviable economic status.
When we arrive, the guide will tell us how architecture has influenced this development through the construction of brightly coloured and even futuristic mansions. In these buildings, you'll be able to observe the fusion of pre-Colombian civilizations and modern trends. These are the iconic Neo-Andean houses, which are also known as cholets in Spanish.
We'll stroll around El Alto and see some of these constructions as well as learning about Freddy Mamani, the most well-known indigenous architect of this style. In addition, we'll take public transport in El Alto so you can see the best cholets around.
During our tour, we'll also visit some shops where you'll find traditional costumes for the Preste, an indigenous festivity that takes place in the Bolivian Andes.
It'll then be time to take the cable car back to La Paz, where we'll finish our tour between 12 pm and 12:30 pm.
