Free Walking Tour of La Orotava
At 10:30 am, we'll meet in the Plaza de la Constitución and set off on our free walking tour of La Orotava. Let's explore one of the most famous towns in northern Tenerife!
During the tour, we'll walk through the old town of La Orotava. As we admire the beauty of its streets, we'll learn all about the history of one of the oldest towns in Tenerife.
To understand the beginnings of this town, we'll travel back in time to the Conquest of the Canary Islands at the end of the 15th century. We'll discuss the Guanche Indigenous people who inhabited this territory before the Spanish conquest. We'll also learn all about Bencomo, the most powerful mencey (king) on the island.
As we stroll around the town, we'll see the large colonial houses and their colourful façades. We'll also come across important religious buildings such as the Church of Saint Augustine and the Church of Our Lady of Conception.
Next, we'll head to the Victoria Gardens to admire fantastic views of all of La Orotava. If it's a clear day, we might even be able to see El Teide. While we admire the views, we'll tell you all about the history of the masonic mausoleum that crowns this park.
Before rounding up our tour, we'll see the outside of the Casa de los Balcones. This 17th-century house and its balconies has become an iconic symbol of the island and is a great place to take lots of photos.
Our free tour of La Orotava will come to an end at 12 noon as we return to the starting point.
