What does Agatha Christie and the explorer Alexander von Humboldt have in common? Find out on this full-day independent trip to Puerto de la Cruz, a picturesque traditional Canarian town.

Itinerary

Depart on a comfortable air-conditioned bus and sit back while you are driven to Puerto de la Cruz, maritime gateway to the famous Valle de La Orotava.

Once you get to the destination, you’ll have the whole day to discover this important tourist resort at your own pace. Puerto de la Cruz is one of the first tourist destinations in Tenerife. At the beginning of the twentieth century, visitors from all over the world began to spend their holidays in Puerto de la Cruz, captivated by its mild climate and beautiful natural beauty. The city is home to numerous attractions designed by the renowned Canarian architect, César Manrique. One of his most famous creations is Playa Jardín. Another must-see landmark is the Castillo de San Felipe, one of the old defensive bastions.

At lunchtime you can head to the town’s promenade or to the centrally-located Plaza del Charco, where the best local restaurants are located. Its nearby streets are also full of shops, where you can buy souvenirs. After lunch, if you have time, we recommend you visit the Calle de San Telmo. In this street is a charming whitewashed chapel dedicated to Saint Telmo. Nearby is the famous Lago Martiánez, a beautiful complex of seawater pools and an open-air museum.

Then, head to the Jardín del Sitio Litre, the oldest garden in Tenerife with a splendid collection of tropical and subtropical plants. The highlight of the enclosure are its orchids, where the English writer Agatha Christie and the naturalist Alexander von Humboldt wandered through, both staying in the neighboring mansion. If you’re interested in botany, we recommend you also visit the Jardín de Aclimatación de La Orotava, another important green space in Puerto de la Cruz.

After a memorable day spent in Puerto de la Cruz, head back to the bus and relax as you are driven to your hotel.
