Free Walking Tour of Podil
Free Walking Tour of Podil
After meeting up at the main entrance to the Kiev River Port, we'll set off on our free walking tour of Podil, the historic district of the Ukrainian capital whose name means "Lower city".
Next to the port on the Dnieper River, we'll find the picturesque Poshtova Ploshcha, one of the oldest historic squares in Kiev. The plaza is home to the Church of the Nativity of Christ as well as the city's 19th century Post Office, which gives it its name - Post Square.
From there, we'll pass by the Kiev Funicular railway, which connects Podil to the hilltop Old Kiev, or Upper City, and the Podolsky Church of the Intercession. We'll then arrive at the famous Andriyivskyy Descent, where we'll admire the historic houses that line this steep street leading up to the old town.
Afterwards, we'll continue exploring Podil, making our way to the Pyrohoshcha Church and the historic Zhytniy Market before stopping at the so-called House of Peter the Great. Strolling through the charming streets, we'll next reach the National Chernobyl Museum, where our guide will tell us all about the tragic disaster at the Ukrainian nuclear site.
Finally, we'll stop to admire the façade of the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy before our tour comes to an end in Kontraktova Square, an important area of Podil home to numerous architectural and historical monuments.
