Chernobyl and Pripyat are sadly infamous due to the 1986 nuclear disaster. This excursion from Kiev will give you the opportunity to experience a ghost town and to see the destruction caused by a simple nuclear mistake.

Itinerary

Meet at the start time near Kiev Central Train Station, where you'll board a bus to Chernobyl. Arriving after a journey of around two hours, the sight of the catastrophe-struck site will cause your heart to sink, giving you a unique insight into the horrors inflicted by the nuclear accident.

You'll pause at the Dytiatky checkpoint, where you'll pass through a nuclear control point specifically for tourists. Here you'll have to present your passport to access the 30km Exclusion Zone.

After crossing the Uzh River and seeing the abandoned towns, you'll arrive in Chernobyl. Wandering through the streets of this notorious city, you'll see the museum, Saint Elijah Church, the Monument to the Chernobyl Liquidators and the park dedicated to the settlements that disappeared after the nuclear disaster.

You'll then arrive at the second checkpoint, at the entrance to the 10km Exclusion Zone. At this point, you'll see the shelter built to confine reactor 4 of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant.

After a brief stop to get your energy back (food not included), you'll discover the Top Secret Military Bases that the USSR had in Chernobyl. You'll get to see Duga, an anti-ballistic missile radar system.

Walking through the Red Forest, one of the area's most contaminated sites, you'll see the trees that turned red after dying from radiation poisoning.

You'll arrive in Pripyat, a city that went from having almost 15,000 inhabitants between the Power Plant workers and their families, to being a ghost town. The tour will take you past an abandoned hotel, the central square, a primary school and the city's theme park, one of the most iconic sites of the tour and one which will quite literally make your hairs stand on end.

Around 5 pm, you'll make another stop at a radiation checkpoint before making your way back to Kiev, leaving behind a place whose memories will remain with you for a very long time...

The tour then arrives back in Kiev around 8 pm.
