Shirakawago Private Day Trip
Day Trip Details
At the indicated time, we'll meet you at your hotel in Kanazawa, and head by public bus to the historic village of Shirakawago. Get ready to experience an incredible village, where Gassho-style houses, built in the early 1800s, are still lived in today!
As we drive through the scenic Japanese Alps, don't forget to enjoy the breathtaking scenery passing us by. After a 1-hour ride, we'll arrive at our destination, nestled high in the mountains. Our first stop of the day will be at the Wada-House, the largest traditional Gassho-style farmhouse in Shirakawago.
In this charming village, we’ll see the largest concentration of Gassho-zukuri style houses, each with its signature thatched roof designed to withstand heavy snowfall. Amazingly, these homes are held together using only ropes—no nails! Fun fact, gasshō-zuruki translates to 'praying hands'—can you spot the relation?
Alongside our guide, we'll embark on a 1-hour tour of Ogimachi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where we'll learn about local life and the history behind these historic homes. Some houses are over 250 years old, with some having been transformed into open-air museums, offering a glimpse into the town’s storied past.
From here, we'll give you an hour of free time to buy some lunch at any of the local restaurants nearby.
Then, we'll begin our return journey to Kanazawa, where we'll accompany you to your hotel and say our goodbyes around 5 hours after the start.
Hotel Pickup
Please note that we'll meet you at your hotel if you're staying in downtown Kanazawa, and we'll either take a taxi (at your expense) or walk together to the bus station. If your hotel is outside the downtown area, we'll meet you directly at the Kanazawa bus station.
Why Book a Private Tour?
By booking a private tour, a personal guide will accompany you, and you'll be able to travel at your own pace and even save money if you're traveling in a larger group!
