Day Trip to the Potiguara Indigenous Reserve
Day Trip Details
Want to learn about one of the largest Indigenous populations in northeastern Brazil? If so, after picking you up at the designated time from your hotel in João Pessoa, we'll begin our drive towards the Potiguara Indigenous Reserve, in Baia da Traiçao. Let's go!
During this 2-hour and 15-minute journey, we'll pass Paraíba's coastline and its green landscape while we discuss the history and traditions of the Potiguara Indigenous people. We'll learn about the ancient Indigenous Tupi language, as well as various dances, ceremonies, and art.
Firstly, we'll make a stop at the ruins of the Church of Saint Michael the Archangel, built by Jesuits in the 17th century. Inside, we'll uncover the history of the enslavement of Indigenous people and how they were forced to worship the Christian religion. Afterwards, we'll make our way to the Gozo River, a waterway surrounded by dense tropical vegetation, protected by over 50 Indigenous families who live in the area.
Next, we'll visit one of the villages so you can grab something to eat if you wish, and after re-energising, we'll head off to find Aldeia São Francisco, considered the mother village. Here, we'll explore the village and get to know the everyday lives of indigenous people. We'll also visit the social space, the Oca, where community meetings, celebrations, and dances all take place.
Ready for our next stop? The Enchanted Lake, where we'll learn about the name's mysticism while we explore the surrounding area and even visit a local family's house. The day trip will culminate with interactions with the locals and trying, if you wish, a snack made of yuca and grated coconut. A true treat!
Finally, we'll begin our journey back and we'll say our goodbyes at your hotel after a total of 12 hours.
