Jakarta & Old Batavia Guided Tour

  • 9 reviews | 51 travellers
My guide Siti is a lovely, sweet and warm person. She explained a lot about Indonesia. She was passionate about sharing knowledge, chatting with locals in order to translate my questions and choosing the best dishes for my lunch! I had only a few hours to get to know Jakarta before my work week in Bandung, thanks to Siti I could make the most out of it. Also my compliments to the driver who did his best so that I could catch my Whoosh train on time. I enjoyed every minute of it!

Tour Details

At the scheduled time, we'll pick you up from your hotel to begin our full tour of Jakarta.

Our first stop will be the National Museum, where we'll go on a guided tour through its most popular exhibitions. This museum is the perfect place to learn about the country's rich history, as it is home to a wide collection of historic and cultural artifacts. Did you know that it is one of the oldest museums in Southeast Asia? This building, located very close to Merdeka Square, is popularly dubbed the 'Elephant Building' - you'll understand why once you step inside!

Our next stop will be the Great Istiqlal Mosque, considered the largest in Southeast Asia and the ninth worldwide. This temple is located very close to the Jakarta Cathedral, showcasing the harmony between these two religions.

After visiting these two stunning monuments, we'll stop briefly for photos at the National Museum of Indonesia, where we'll also stop for 30 to 45 minutes to enjoy a traditional lunch.

Continuing our tour, we'll stroll along the streets of Jakarta until we arrive at Chinatown, also known as Glodok. In this part of town you'll have the chance to admire its temples and market.

Are you looking for adventure? Next on our tour, we'll hop on a tuk-tuk and enjoy an exciting ride through Old Batavia, Jakarta's historic center. Nicknamed the "Jewel of Asia" and the "Queen of the Orient" by European sailors in the 16th century, this significant location within the Indonesian capital is less than 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) long. We'll learn about its history and how it became a trading center for Southeast Asia due to its strategic position.

In Batavia, we'll visit a traditional puppet studio, where you'll learn about the significance of shadow puppets in Indonesian culture. Finally, we'll reach the old Port of Jakarta, which witnessed the days when this city was an important commercial enclave. You'll be transported to the past!

After this 5 to 6-hour tour of the Indonesian capital, we'll end our tour back at the starting point.

Closing Times

Museums in Jakarta close on Mondays. The Great Istiqlal Mosque closes on Fridays.
