History and nature combine perfectly in this tour of Iglesiente. We'll explore this region admiring its incredible landscapes and discovering the mining past of the island of Sardinia.
Iglesiente Mines Coastal Tour
At 9 am, we'll meet at Fontanamare Beach, located just 12 kilometers from the center of Iglesias. From there, we'll set off on a route to explore the region of Iglesiente, famous for its historic mines and beautiful coastline. The tour will combine walking and driving your own vehicle, as you follow the guide who will also travel in their own car.
To begin, we'll learn fascinating details about this historic area while we admire the end of the Umberto I Gallery, a tunnel built in the 19th century to connect the Monteponi mine with the beach of Fontanamare. Nearby we'll see the ruins of other buildings related to this sector, including an old chimney.
As we walk to the mining village of Nebida, we'll continue to delve into the history of these lands. Phoenicians, Carthaginians, and Romans were already aware of the richness of the Sardinian subsoil. During the tour, we'll tell you all about how these civilizations began to exploit the mineral deposits of Sardinia.
We'll walk through Nebida and descend its hills until we get close to the ruins of the La Marmora wash plant, where the zinc and lead obtained from the mines were once separated and classified.
Afterward, we'll head to a viewpoint with incredible panoramic views of the coast of Masua and the famous islet of Pan di Zucchero. Time for some great photos!
Once we arrive at Masua beach, we'll leave you half an hour of free time to relax. Then, we'll resume our journey to the Porto Flavia mine, which was in operation all the way up until 1964. We'll go on an exclusive tour of the mine site, without waiting in any lines to access the mine!
At 2 pm, the tour will conclude at the entrance of the mine of Porto Flavia.
