On this guided tour of Idanha-a-Velha, we'll travel back in time as we visit the main archaeological remains of this village founded by the Romans over 2,000 years ago – a place steeped in history!

Idanha-a-Velha Guided Tour

At the indicated time, we'll meet in front of the North Gate of the city wall. From there, we'll start an interesting guided tour of Idanha-a-Velha where Roman and Visigoth ruins and a lot of history await us!

After the introductions, we'll start talking about the Roman wall of Idanha-a-Velha. Did you know that it was a prosperous city founded by the Romans under the name of Igaeditanorum? Its medieval walled enclosure dates back to the 3rd and 4th centuries and is still one of the most important elements of this historic village in central Portugal.

Then, we'll take a look at the Tower of the Templars, an architectural element that sits on the pedestal of an ancient Roman temple, which is now very well preserved, and we'll reveal all that it hides!

Next, we'll continue our tour of Idanha-a-Velha visiting the archaeological remains located next to the cathedral. There we'll see the ruins of a baptistery, considered the oldest in the Iberian Peninsula, and the episcopal residence.

After a two-hour tour of Idanha-a-Velha, we'll say goodbye at the meeting point.
