Nevado del Tolima Private 4-day Hiking Route
Day 1: Ibagué - Finca Vancouver
We will meet at Carrera 4d in Ibagué at 4 am. There we'll get into a 4x4 to drive to the point where we'll start the trekking route to the summit of the Nevado del Tolima.
After a journey of three and a half hours, we'll arrive at La Punta, in the town of Palomar. With our batteries recharged after breakfast, we'll walk along an irregular and stony path for a total of 10 kilometres (6.2 miles).
On the way, we'll pass through the Amberes valley and enjoy the glacial landscape of the Vancouver and Bombona lakes. In this area we'll take a break for a hamburger lunch.
Finally, we'll arrive at the Finca Vancouver country inn to rest until the next day.
Day 2: Finca Vancouver - Arenales
On the second day, we'll have a delicious breakfast of eggs, arepa and a drink to fill us up with energy. With our batteries recharged, we'll embark on a 13-kilometre (8 miles) route with a climb of up to 790 metres (2591 feet)
As we start to climb the Nevado del Tolima, the terrain will become more uneven. On the trail we'll come across moorlands and sandy areas where endemic species such as toucans and Andean condors live. Then it'll be time to take a break for lunch. We'll have a delicious beef stew before continuing our hike.
On this trek we'll also enjoy a spectacular panoramic view of Los Nevados National Park from an altitude of 4400 metres (14435 feet). We'll finish the day by arriving at the Arenales campsite.
Day 3: Arenales - Cañon Hot Springs
On the third day we'll wake up very early, so we'll take some snacks for breakfast on the way. We'll start a 12-kilometre (7.4 miles) hike to the top of the Nevado del Tolima.
At the end of this hike, which takes about ten hours, we'll reach the summit, with a height of more than 5200 metres (17060 feet)! From this fantastic spot, we'll be able to admire the Nevado de Ruiz, the Nevado del Cisne and the Nevado de Santa Isabel. In addition, this location will allow us to see the paramillo del Quindío, Santa Rosa and the valley of the Magdalena River.
We'll finish the day arriving at the thermal baths of Cañón, medicinal pools of volcanic origin. Here we'll take a hot bath and rest at the campsite until the next day.
Day 4: Cañón Hot Springs - Ibagué
On the last day, we'll hike 18 kilometres (11miles) back to La Punta. We'll leave the thermal baths of Cañón and start the descent through the Nevado del Tolima.
We'll walk to Palomar, a mountainous municipality belonging to Anzoátegui. Once there, we'll visit the waterfall El Salto. Then we'll have a delicious beef stew for lunch.
