Day of the Dead Evening Tour

We think of death as the end of everything, and yet it's just the beginning. In Mexico, the "final journey" is celebrated in a very special way. You will discover it for yourself when we pick you up at 7 pm from your hotel in Bahías de Huatulco. Then, after a 40-minute bus ride, we will reach the town of Santa María Huatulco, where we will take a walking tour to discover all the secrets and legends about one of the most eagerly awaited evenings of the year: the Day of the Dead celebration.

Like all cities in the State of Oaxaca, between the end of October and the beginning of November, the streets of Santa María Huatulco are adorned with the typical decorations of the Day of the Dead. We will see the famous altars with skulls, skeletons, and portraits of deceased loved ones, on every street corner. This is not a sad event, as in Mexico the Day of the Dead is a joyful celebration in memory of our lost relatives.

During the walk through Santa María Huatulco we will see how the streets and churches of the town are illuminated with the lights of the dead. We will also visit a local house, where we will taste some chocolate and bread, as is typically eaten during this celebration. We will also have a drink of mezcal, one of the most popular liqueurs in Mexico.

Our tour around Santa María Huatulco continues with a visit to the Municipal Pantheon. In this cemetery, we will see how the local population honors their deceased, while we hear some legends and stories that illustrate the blurred line that separates the living from the dead. On this important date, souls of those who have already left the earthly world, traditionally come back to remind us that we are only passing through this life.

At the end of the tour, we will head back to Bahías de Huatulco, arriving at your hotel at around midnight.
