Ancient ruins, lost civilizations, imposing fortresses... Join us on this 3-day excursion to Tantamayo from Huanuco to experience all of these wonders and much more in central Peru!

3-Day Tour of Tantamayo

Day 1: Huanuco - Kotosh - Tantamayo

The tour will commence at 9 am when we pick you up at your hotel in Huanuco and hit the road towards the town of Tantamayo. During the six-hour drive, we'll pass by the archaeological site of Kotosh, where the mysterious temple of the Crossed Hands is located.

Our road trip will then take us through the valley of the Marañon River before we finally reach the village of Tantamayo, located on the bank of the river. We'll settle into the lodge and then you'll have free time to explore the town and visit the beautiful 16th-century church.

Day 2: Tantamayo

We'll start the day with an energizing breakfast, after which we'll head to the archaeological center of Tantamayo. We'll walk for about 35 minutes and arrive at the first sector of the complex, called Piruro. Here we'll see yarowilca constructions up to 12 meters (40 feet) high. Did you know that they are known as the skyscrapers of the Andes?

Then we'll continue the tour in the Selmin Granero sector, which was used as a warehouse to store grain and other food. We'll travel by bus back to the lodge to eat lunch before heading back again to the archaeological site. For 40 minutes we'll hike at an altitude of between 3400 and 3900 meters (11,150 - 12,800 feet) until we reach the Susopillo sector, the highest point in Tantamayo.

In Susopillo we'll see the fortress, as well as other buildings such as temples and colcas. In these ancient ruins, we'll learn about the lost civilizations that lived in Peru before the Inca Empire. Finally, we'll return to the lodge for dinner and to rest until the next day.

Day 3: Tantamayo - Corona del Inca - Huanuco

At 6 am we'll have breakfast and say goodbye to Tantamayo to start our return to Huanuco. During the trip, we'll pass by picturesque villages of the Huanuco highlands such as Chavin de Pariarca, Quivilla, Tingo Chico, and Ayapiteg. Here, we'll be able to see the hill known as Corona del Inca (Crown of the Inca), can you guess why it's called that? We'll find out!

Finally, we'll arrive in Huanuco and drop you back off at your hotel at 1 pm.
