Hostalric Castle, a Catalonian Legacy
On the top of a hill in the volcanic region of La Garrocha stands Hostalric Castle, one of the most remarkable monumental legacies of Catalonia. This fortification, originally built in 1145, had three bastions, defense towers, a moat, and two ravelins, but was demolished by French troops in 1695.
The modern design of the castle, dating from 1716, was attributed to Philip V's engineer general, Prospero de Verboom, the same man who designed the Citadel of Barcelona and the fortification of La Seu Vella de Lleida. In 1963, both the castle and the walls were declared an Asset of National Interest.
What to See at Hostalric Castle
With your ticket to the Hostalric Castle, you'll travel back in time to the town's medieval past that lent it its name, on the banks of the river Tordera. You'll go through the subway access to see the portal of the carriages, the guardhouse, the bastion of Santa Tecla, and the square of weapons. Currently, there is also a part of the castle that has been converted into a restaurant.
The castle is accessible by a fortified road dating back to the late Middle Ages. The two parallel walls on the road were protected by two circular towers, of which today only a very small section is preserved. However, from the top of the monument you can enjoy magnificent panoramic views of La Garrocha.
