On this excursion to the deserted island of Spinalonga, we'll discover the amazing story of the leprosy patients who sought refuge in this part of Crete.
Spinalonga Day Trip
At the indicated time, we'll meet at Eleftherias Square and drive through the north of the island to Kritsa, one of Crete's oldest villages.
Here, we'll take a guided tour of the village and visit the 12th-century church of Panagia Kera, which houses some of the best-preserved Byzantine-era frescoes in Crete.
We'll continue travelling, passing through the town of Elounda, until we reach the coastal village of Plaka, passing by many towns along the way. Once we arrive, we'll take a boat to the deserted island of Spinalonga, a place overflowing with history.
Once we arrive, we'll embark on a tour through the ruins of a fortress that used to welcome leprosy patients from Crete and the rest of Greece looking for a place to spend the rest of their days. Your guide will tell you all about the treatments introduced by a special doctor who came to help the people of Spinalonga.
After visiting the island of Spinalonga, we'll return by boat to Plaka, where you'll have free time to take a dip in the water and grab some lunch at one of the restaurants by the sea. After eating, we'll make our way to Agios Nikolaos, where we'll check out the Voulis salt lake. We'll also tour around the city which is full of interesting archaeological museums and Byzantine churches.
Finally, we'll bring this tour to an end by returning to Heraklión, where we'll arrive back at the meeting point after around 9.5 hours together.
Finally, we'll take you back to your hotel in Heraklion, arriving 8.5 hours after the start of the day trip.
