Haputale Tea Plantation Hiking Tour
Haputale Tea Plantation Hiking Tour
Early in the morning, we'll meet at Haputale train station to take the 1.5-hour train ride to Ohiya.
From the train station in Ohiya, we'll start our trekking route, traversing forests and enjoying the beautiful natural environment of this area of Sri Lanka. For about 30 minutes, we'll walk along a path that will take us to a panoramic viewpoint from where we'll see the tea plantation. Afterwards, we'll walk another half hour to our destination.
We'll meet the family that manages the tea plantation, and they'll show us around their land and the various products that they make using the tea plant. We'll also see how they pick the tea leaves, and you can even participate in the harvest. It'll be an authentic experience!
Then, we'll say goodbye to the family and take a walk through eucalyptus and pine forests, following the train tracks into tunnels under the mountains of Sri Lanka.
Next, we'll stop for a picnic lunch and continue our journey through the Thangamale bird sanctuary. From there, we'll enjoy beautiful views of the mountain of the same name and the Uva Basin. We'll see blue magpies, flycatchers, golden orioles, trogons, black eagles, and many more species of birds!
Finally, we'll arrive at Ohiya after walking a total of 8.7 miles (14 km). We'll take the train back to Haputale and end the tour at the station after a 6-hour experience.
