Hamburg Red Light District & Harbour Free Tour
We'll meet at 2 pm at St. Pauli Piers, the Landungsbrücken ready to start our tour of this lively district. We'll learn all about the key role that the harbour plays in Germany's second-largest city. We'll discover the importance of the port and it´s dramatic challenges that is has undergone throughout its history. We'll also learn about low tides; high tides; storm tides.
From the port, we'll make our way to the famously lively Fish Market. Here vendors come and sell their fresh produce and barter for the best bargains! Next we'll make our way to one of the most popular and culturally diverse districts: Hafenstrasse which literally means Harbour Street. This street is known for its squats which after a long battle with the city council involving over 10,000 people, were legalized in the 1990s. Today the area is known for autonomist and anti-imperialist politics and today the buildings are owned by a self-organised cooperative.
Our next stop will be the famous Reeperbahn, it's a great spot to come back to later at night to see how the party gets started in this bohemian neighbourhood! We'll continue on to Große Freiheit or Beatles square. Built in 2008, these five silhouettes of the British 60s rock band commemorate the role the city of Hamburg played in their path to international success. This area is known for its lively bars and music venues.
Next we'll venture into the famous red-light district. We'll come to the popular tourist attraction of Hans-Albers-Platz, within the red light district. Then we'll come to Herbertstraße one of the most famous streets in the area. Finally we'll visit Davidwache, Germany's best-known police station. This building is known from numerous movies and TV series, and even Paul McCartney had to spend a night in its cells!
