Day Trip to Hobbitenango & Antigua
Hobbitenango: Guatemala's Hobbiton
Did you know that the tall mountains in southeastern Guatemala are home to a hobbit village? This is exactly the case! In a village called El Hato, very close to Antigua Guatemala, you'll find Hobbitenango. This theme park's unusual name comes from a mix of 'Hobbiton' and 'Tenango'. This final word means 'fortified place' in the Indigenous language. Interested in discovering more?
After picking you up from your hotel in Guatemala City at the designated time, we'll begin our journey to Hobbitenango. Once here, you'll have 2 hours of free time to enjoy its viewpoints, food stalls, natural paths, a giant swing, and a minigolf course. All of this is under the theme of the fantastical Third Age from the time of the hobbits. Magical!
You'll also be able to try your hand at archery and axe throwing and find the Hand of the Stone Giant Norot on the precipice of a mountain. Here, you can climb onto the immense hand and admire Guatemala's volcanoes and the Panchoy Valley which surrounds Antigua Guatemala.
A Loyal Replica of the Shire in Guatemala
As you walk through Hobbitenango, it'll seem as if the hobbits built their iconic homes with round doors in this forestal area in Guatemala. Every detail has been designed to transport you to the Shire.
Some of these houses in Hobbitenango can be entered and you can even enjoy the volcanic views from the windows. Nevertheless, others are part of the park's hotel, such as Casa Esmeralda, Casita del Nido, and Casita del Sueño. Either way, you'll be able to take photos in front of their unique facades and the paths with rustic wooden stick fences
From Hobbitenango to Antigua Guatemala
After discovering this fantastical spot, it's then time to head down to Antigua Guatemala. We'll re-energise at a local restaurant in this colonial city, where we'll enjoy a tasty Guatemalan lunch. We deserve it!
This meal includes one dish, to choose between pork tenderloin, grouper cooked in garlic, lemon chicken, or pasta pesto. The dish you select will be accompanied by garlic bread, a traditional drink made of roselle juice, and vanilla ice cream with strawberry coulis. Delicious!
Having eaten, we'll go on a guided tour, beginning at Antigua's welcoming central park. From here, we'll admire the surrounding colourful colonial buildings: the Parish of San José, the Captain General Palace, and the entrance pathways.
We'll walk along the historical cobbled streets where you can take photos in front of the city's most representative monuments. Of course, we'll also stroll down Arco Street which leads to the Church of La Merced. Did you know that local legend says its facade is yellow because it is made of corn?
Lastly, we'll begin our return journey to Guatemala City, and we'll say our goodbyes at your hotel after a total of 6 to 8 hours.
