Cultural Tour of Guaitil

Let's plan to meet at the evangelical church of Guaitil, just outside of Santa Cruz, in the Guanacaste province. From here, we'll set off on a route through the winding alleyways of one of the most traditional villages in the Pacific Northwest of Costa Rica.

As we stroll through Guaitil, we'll find a perfectly intact 'tica' culture, beautifully preserved in the warmth of the locals welcoming visitors. Around each corner, a new smiling face is ready to show visitors the island's beauty that comes in all forms. Along the way, we'll also discuss the rich indigenous history on the island and how Guaitil was founded.

Throughout our route, we'll learn about the main local trade: a peculiar practice of creating art pieces from mud and clay, that dates back to pre-Hispanic times. Plus, we'll divulge some culinary techniques used in local dishes in the region.

Following our tour through the village, we'll arrive at a local family's home to live an authentic Costa Rican experience, for a genuine cultural exchange. You can choose from the following activities listed below:

  • Ceramic demonstration (30 minutes): we'll see how artisans create ceramic pieces with unique techniques and authentic works of Indigenous art!
  • Rosquillas & tanelas workshop (40 minutes): we'll learn how to make these delicious sweets typical of Guanacaste, which are a mixture of cinnamon, panela, spices, and cheese.
  • Homemade bread workshop (1 hour): Did you know that Guanacasteco bread is a mixture of cheeses and is unique to Costa Rica? We'll learn how to make it using Guaitil's traditional technique.
  • Chicken achiote workshop (2 hours): Having worked up an appetite after the tour leaves the perfect opportunity for a traditional lunch! With this activity, we'll sit down to enjoy a traditional dish, widely known among the Tico community and a crowd favorite!
