The best free tour I've ever taken, and I've been on at least 50 tours. Very local, with interesting facts about the country, the city, and its cultures. Irvin was flexible enough to extend the tour or not to suit the participants, and even included a tasting of the town's typical dessert. Outstanding.

Tour Details

At the indicated time, we'll meet at Çerçiz Topulli Square and, once we're all there, we'll begin this free tour of Gjirokastër. Are you ready to explore one of the most picturesque cities in southern Albania?

Taking advantage of our meeting point, we'll talk about the man after whom this central square is named, Çerçiz Topulli, an Albanian hero born in this town, as we also admire a monument dedicated to him.

Afterwards, we'll continue to the Bazaar, a vibrant market where we'll experience the local culture and most traditional stalls. Next, we'll admire the exterior of Skënduli House, an impressive example of Ottoman-era architecture.

Next, we'll walk towards the Ethnographic Museum, the former childhood home of Enver Halil Hoxha, the former Prime Minister of Albania. Here, you can see a large collection of objects and household items, which offer insight into what Albania was like in the 19th century.

We'll continue touring the cobbled streets of Gjirokastër as we approach the house of Ismail Kadare, the birthplace of Albania's most famous writer, winner of the International Booker Prize and the Prince of Asturias Award for Literature.

Upon our arrival at the starting point, we'll stop in front of the Cold War tunnel, a hidden underground bunker from the communist era. Finally, we'll say goodbye after a total of 2 hours of sightseeing.
