We'll meet at the designated time at Via dei Mulini in Francavilla di Sicilia. Once there, we'll get ready to begin this mysteries and legends tour of the Alcantara Gorges. Ready for a unique experience?
We'll begin our visit by travelling back in time to uncover the ancient Neolithic tombs dotted around the Alcantara Valley. Amongst these, a particularly notable example is a sepulchral tomb that dates back to the end of the Copper Age and the beginning of the Early Bronze Age —a rare example of the mature Castelluccian period.
Next, we'll head over to Castiglione di Sicilia, a municipality that is home to the Pietramarina hill. Did you know that the only prehistoric evidence of sandstone survives here among the lava flows? Right next to this unique site, we'll find ancient megaliths and stone-carved structures, which were once dwellings and now tell us about the distant history of these lands.
Here we'll also admire the gorges that feature in this part of the Alcántara Valley. Not only will we observe the river that winds its way through stratified lava walls, but we'll also witness the unique formations of these rocks. We'll tell you the legendary stories of ancient eruptions and the slow sedimentation that has shaped this beautiful natural landscape.
Lastly, we'll conclude our tour with a dinner in the Castiglione di Sicilia countryside, made up of typical Sicilian products. The menu includes cured meats, cheeses, pickled vegetables, and sun-dried tomatoes. We'll pair this with some wine and water. What more could we ask for?
