Bird Watching in the Mahaica River
Bird Watching in the Mahaica River
At 4:30 am we'll pick you up at your hotel in Georgetown. With the first light of dawn, we'll set off along the Demerara coast until we reach the Mahaica River, one of the longest rivers in Guyana.
After an hour-long drive, we'll board a boat and cruise upstream as the sun rises, in search of the many birds that live in this huge ecosystem. The highlight of the trip will be one species in particular: the Hoatzin, the national bird of Guyana.
During the boat ride on the Mahaica River, we'll find out what makes the Hoatzin bird so unique. Did you know that it has an intestine similar to that of cows and goats? Or that it's a direct descendant of the prehistoric feathered dinosaur called the Archaeopteryx?
We'll also surely spot other species such as the blood-colored woodpecker, the white-bellied grosbeak, the crab hawk, the green-tailed jacamar, and the little Cuckoo. Apart from the fascinating birds, we'll see other animals such as otters and monkeys along the Mahaica River.
Throughout the tour, we'll also learn about the flora and vegetation that lines the Mahaica River, which, as you'll see for yourself, is uniquely beautiful. Finally, we'll return to the mainland to refresh and recharge with a delicious local breakfast in a restaurant near the river.
At 9:30 am we'll start our way back to your hotel in Georgetown, where we'll finish the birding tour at approximately 10:30 am.
