Hiking Parco delle Mura
Hiking Parco delle Mura
We'll meet at Via Carlo Targa in Genoa to start a hiking route through the Parco delle Mura Natural Area. Ready to get to know the longest defensive system in Europe? Come on!
As we leave the historic downtown of Genoa behind us, we'll walk to the Zecca-Righi funicular railway, one of the oldest in the Ligurian capital. We'll climb into one of its cabins and, in just 15 minutes, we'll reach the highest part of the city. As we reach the top, we'll arrive at a perfect setting of natural space ready to be explored.
Parco delle Mura boasts a surface area of about 900 hectares (2,223 acres) and provides a natural habitat to numerous protected species. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled, if we're careful we'll spot some along our route! Plus, our route includes a stroll through the butterfly trail, a dedicated area where these insects reproduce
Enhancing the experience further, during the hike we'll see the famous Forti della Superba and the Mura Nuove, both former military structures built in the Ligurian Apennines to defend Genoa from Savoyard attacks. Fun fact: it's the second longest wall in the world after the Great Wall of China!
To end the hiking route on a high note, we'll duck into a typical tavern to refuel with a typical breakfast featuring focaccia and crackers.
Then, we'll take the funicular back to Genoa and wrap up our tour after 4 hours of activity.
