Majestic mountains, dreamlike castles, endless lakes... On our Connemara & Kylemore Abbey Day Trip, we'll discover the fascinating history and most beautiful scenery of western Ireland.
Description
At the indicated time, we'll pick you up from the Hyde Hotel in Galway and set off on our day trip through Connemara's rugged beauty. We'll begin by heading towards the Connemara National Park, which we'll see from our vehicle.
After a 1-hour drive, we'll make a short stop in the village of Leenane. You'll have 30 minutes of free time here to stroll around the quiet streets of this hillside village. If you need a little pick-me-up, we recommend having an Irish coffee or a whisky at one of the local pubs.
Having reconvened, we'll head to Killary Fjord. This is Ireland's only fjord, and it serves as a natural border between the counties of Galway and Mayo. Its spectacular scenery will help us to understand the natural geographical changes that have taken place in this area over a period of millions of years. Don't forget your camera!
Next, we'll drive to Kylemore Abbey on the banks of Pollacappul Lough. This breathtaking site was built in the 19th century by the politician Mitchell Henry as a gift for his wife.
You'll have 2 hours of free time to tour this building and discover why it was so important to the locals after the Great Famine. Today, the abbey is owned by Benedictine nuns and features a miniature Gothic church and walled Victorian gardens.
During the second half of our tour, we'll drive along the Wild Atlantic Way and stop at the village of An Spidéal. Here, you'll have 15 minutes of free time to walk through the streets and admire the traditional thatched houses.
We'll then make our way back to Galway and drop you off in the city centre around 5:30 pm.
