Castles of Connemara Guided Tour
Castles of Connemara Guided Tour
At the indicated time, we'll meet at Galway Cathedral. Once we're all gathered, we'll get on a bus that'll take us to discover one of the treasures of Connemara - its castles. Let's travel back in time to the Middle Ages!
Famous for its wild and rugged landscapes, the Connemara region is home to numerous castles full of stories and legends worth knowing. First, we'll head to Aughnanure Castle, near Lough Corrib.
There we'll learn the history of the O'Flahertys, one of Connacht's most prominent noble families during the 16th century. We'll stroll around the remains of what was once the banqueting hall, see their watchtower or the many bastions that are still standing.
Next, we'll continue travelling through the beautiful scenery of Connemara, specifically through the Inagh Valley, until we reach Kylemore Abbey, built by order of the politician Mitchell Henry as a wedding gift for his wife. You'll have an hour of free time to explore this beautiful abbey–make sure not to miss its Victorian gardens or its Gothic church!
We'll then leave Kylemore and make a brief stop near Ballynahinch Castle, a fortress steeped in history, for a souvenir photo. On the way, we'll also be able to see the famous Sky Road.
Finally, we'll say goodbye at the starting point 8 hours after the start of the activity.
