Immerse yourself in one of the most beautiful areas of Madeira on this hike through Rabaçal and along the Levada das 25 Fontes from Funchal.
Description
After picking you up from your hotel in Funchal and head to the Arco da Calheta by minibus. From this picturesque town in southern Madeira, we'll begin our trekking route.
We'll take a trail known as the Levada das 25 Fontes, one of the many historic aqueducts characteristic of Madeira, which have been developed into a wide network of walking paths. This particular one is named for the 25 natural springs located along the route. It has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is home to a great biodiversity of plants of wildlife, which we'll learn all about during our hike.
Following the levada, we'll reach the Lagoa de 25 Fontes, a natural lagoon into which the 25 Fontes Falls flows. This 30-metre (almost 100 ft) high waterfall is made up of different water streams cascading down the mountainside. You'll have 30 minutes of free time to enjoy a refreshing dip in the pool and eat the food you've brought with you.
In the afternoon, we'll meet back up again to hike through Rabaçal and begin the route back to Arco da Calheta. From there, we'll make the return journey to Funchal, where you'll be dropped off at your hotel around 5 pm.
