Hiking Tour Around the Caldeirão Verde Levada
Description
At the scheduled time, we'll swing by to pick you up at your hotel in Funchal and head over to one of the lush green paradise locations on the island of Madeira.
Once we get to the starting point of the hiking route, we'll set off following along the course of the most famous levadas of Madeira. Levadas are u-shaped canals or aqueducts that are very characteristic of this Portuguese island.
We'll begin at Pico das Pedras and follow its levada, built in the 19th century until we come across a dense green laurel forest. After delving into the forest, we'll cross the Queimadas Park while admiring its valleys, gorges, and waterfalls. Here we'll find the Queimadas house, a thatched-roof dwelling built in the typical old style of houses in Santana.
The 5-hour-long hike will continue and cross four artificial tunnels, arriving at Caldeirão Verde, a lake with a 100-meter (328-foot) high waterfall where we'll stop to rest and enjoy the magnificent natural scenery.
Finally, we'll retrace our steps and end up back at the starting point. The hike will last about 5 hours, and the entire excursion will take up a total of around 8 hours.
