Join us for a kayaking tour along Lake Mapourika in Franz Josef! Paddle through glacial waters, discover ancient rainforests and spot native wildlife.

Tour Details

We'll meet at the indicated time at 30 Main Road for an exciting kayak tour on Lake Mapourika, a glacial lake that formed as part of the Franz Josef Glacier. Paddles up as we hop into a vehicle that will take us to our launch point, from where we'll explore the Westland Tai Poutini National Park!

Before setting off on our adventure, we'll go over some safety guidelines and learn how to safely kayak, ensuring a fun and safe experience. Then, it's time to hop in our kayaks and hit the water.

Throughout the experience, we’ll paddle through the lake to enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding Southern Alps and Franz Josef Glacier. With our guide leading the way, we'll cruise along a narrow estuary amidst the lush ancient rainforest of the Okarito Kiwi Sanctuary.

Along the way, our guide will share fascinating insights into the area's biodiversity. We'll make our way through some of the region's untouched Jurassic rainforest and pristine wilderness where we can take stunning photos. Get those cameras ready!

Following a refreshing 3 hours of gentle exercise along the tranquil lake, we'll bring the experience to an end back at the meeting point.

Nature Walk

Enhance your experience at Franz Josef when you opt to add a nature walk to your kayak tour! Set foot in ancient rainforests and connect with nature like never before.

We'll follow the same itinerary as described above, but halfway through the kayak tour, we'll set off on a walkabout along a custom-built rainforest trail within the Okarito Kiwi Conservation area. Along the way, we'll learn about kiwi conservation efforts and try our best to spot native bird species

This tour ends back at the meeting point after a grand total of 4 hours.
