Tour Description
At the indicated time, we'll meet at the Castello Estense to start a 2.5-hour private tour of Ferrara. Did you know that the Estense Lordship ruled Ferrara for more than 300 years? And that it has been a World Heritage Site since 1995? It's also considered the Italian capital of cycling—a destination full of fun facts to discover!
The tour will begin in the courtyard of Castello Estense, which can be admired from the outside. A symbol of the city par excellence, it was built as a fortress and later transformed into a ducal residence for the Estense family. You'll witness the grandeur of its past by admiring its terraces, balconies and imposing towers.
We'll then proceed to Piazza Savonarola and Piazza Cattedrale, the latter adorned by the grandiose façade of the Romanesque-Gothic cathedral and the former Ducal Palace, which today houses the Town Hall. Close to these monuments is still the Loggia dei Merciai, the place where business was done in the Middle Ages.
Continuing on, we'll walk through the medieval streets and enter the oldest part of the city, where we'll find the Via delle Volte. There, we'll learn about the importance of the Po River and its ancient ports. Moreover, in the medieval part of the city, we'll stroll through the still intact narrow streets of the Jewish ghetto, which housed one of the most flourishing Jewish communities in Italy.
Finally, before reaching Corso Ercole I d'Este, we'll pass by the Antica Enoteca Al Brindisi, the oldest tavern in the world, in operation since before 1435. The visit will end at the Palazzo dei Diamanti, a late 15th-century building—the perfect finale to this journey back in time!
